So you have a blog. You’re not alone. And like any other blogger, your goal is to get that blog into circulation and gain a readership. Yeah, that’s easy for the newspapers to say. Well, it could be easy for you to say too. Think of your blog as your own personal newspaper – chock full of news, information, features, cartoons (or images and video, in this case) – that it is your job to sell. But the best part is you don’t have to sell it alone. Open your ears, and I’ll let you in on how you could be using Twitter as your blog newsboy:
• Stress what you know others care about and will want to read. People tend to first flock to the dramatic news headlines before the rest. Once ten newsboys start shouting the same headlines, the news starts to lose its appeal. Be the newsboy that thrives on delivering something new.
• Like the typical newsboy pitch, your tweets shouldn’t give away the whole story, but rather teasers as an attention-grabber.
• Don’t be too “in-your-face”. I know this is a stretch for newsboys, but getting too aggressive can quickly turn a potential reader away. Keep your spiel short, sweet, and to the point, and shout it less often.
• Communicate with your potential readership. The newsboy doesn’t just sit there and do nothing, and neither should you. Get out there! Not everyone will see that stack of papers sitting there, and if you don’t guide them to you, chances are the papers will continue to sit there.
So the next time your hot topics are hot off the press, keep that newsboy in mind. He just might come in handy.
